Suzanne Vega

Widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been labeled contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Vega sings in a distinctive, clear vibratoless voice that has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper-brushed nearwhisper” and as “plaintive but disarmingly powerful.”

Dime Stories: Dime Off
Dime-Offs are the newest editions to the DimeStories family. DimeStories are 3-minute stories read by the author. Dime-Offs are micro-story smack downs. Put up your dukes and see who has the best story each month. How is something so subjective judged, you might ask? Each story is written to the same theme. The themes are posted in advance for the upcoming months. The readings will be judged by audience peers based on story quality, performance, and sticking to the theme. Of course, as with all DimeStories, they have to be under 3-minutes (about 500 words). Going over time will cost you. If you don’t have the gumption to read, but like to judge other people, volunteer the evening of, and we’ll supply you with an official clipboard. For readers, there will be prizes. We won’t tell you what they are though, it would ruin the surprise.
This weeks themes are “Unwelcome Guests” and “Allergies” so get pen to paper and join us!

Mauger

Mauger, which is a word defined simply as, “in spite of,” is an apt description for a jazz collective that defies expectations and easy labels. Drummer Gerry Hemingway and bassist Mark Dresser are progressive jazz pioneers who’ve imprinted a colossal impression within improvisational circles. They are joined by young rising star and saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa. With their uncanny sense of musical empathy and their inventive buoyancy, Mauger is defining and expanding the meaning of contemporary jazz.

P.O.S feat. Grieves with Budo and Dessa of Doomtrei

It’s been quite a year for Rhymesayers recording artist P.O.S - Never Better marked the third album from this Minneapolis rapper, which appeared on multiple year end lists including Spin’s “Top 10 Best Album You Might Have Missed” and MySpace’s Top 50. After four videos (Drumroll, Optimist, Purexed, Never Better), a cover of Pearl Jam’s “Why Go”, MTV2 Discover and Download artist nod, a solo cup performance at the MTVu Woodies and non-stop touring it doesn’t look like P.O.S. will be slowing down anytime soon. He’ll hit the road in February on a two month “Every Never Is Now” headlining tour.

Luminance

Luminance returns this winter bigger and better than ever with performances from ft Jenny Suk, JR Aquino, Erika David, Dawen, and Legaci.
“Luminance is created to provide a new stage for Asian American musicians. The goal is to illuminate creative talent that has always been here but never acknowledged in mainstream media. Only very recently have we seen a wonderful growing presence of Asian American talent through free online media outlets such as YouTube and BlogTV. Through these outlets, Asian Americans sitting in front of their computers screens are finally able to identify with faces that are still never seen on TV or radio. The millions upon millions of viewers, supporters, and fans for these artists show that the talent and desire for them to be seen is there. Music industry heads just need to eventually recognize this. Which is why The Loft is proud to help this movement with Luminance by opening the computer screen barrier and bringing them live to UC San Diego.”
-Kane Diep: Luminance series curator, Loft Club Manager & Third Year Marshall Student at UC San Diego
