Broadside Ballads: Justin Townes Earle feat. Joe Pug

Justin Earle comes from good stock. His father (legendary and ground-breaking singer/songwriter Steve Earle) must have taught him well. But don’t be so quick to compare him to his father. Whatever he may have learned from his old man, he continues to prove himself as an individual- always forging his own path no matter where the others are going. Maybe that is the most important lesson he learned from his father (as well as being the main thing they have in common artistically).

Aside from that, you must speak a different language when discussing Justin Earle. Whether it be with his now defunct tin-pan/bluegrass/ragtime extravaganza, The Swindlers- or his loud rocking unit, The Distributors- the songs are always smart. And the songs are always good. Justin’s honest voice perfectly reinforces his searing melodies and provocative lyrics. Always above (and beyond) par, his music is rapidly creating a buzz in and around Nashville- and elsewhere. As pop music perpetually becomes more and more stale and irrelevant, Justin Earle will continue to forge a path of musical righteousness and great rock and roll. Just watch.

Starting the evening off will be Loft favorite (and previously seen as part of the folk series) Joe Pug.

    Brooklyn Rider

Brooklyn Rider came together for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, so its interests lie well beyond the borough. Using the string quartet as a vehicle for borderless communication, Brooklyn Rider is recreating the 300-year-old form as a vital twenty-first-century ensemble. Showcasing everything from haunting Armenian laments, to classical arrangements of Mexican art-rock music, to driving Gypsy-inflected improvisations, there’s something for everyone here.

    Swarmius

Composer Joe Waters must have a lotta brain under that academy cap—a music professor at San Diego State, his quartet Swarmius proves that contemporary spins on symphonic standards can bring serious music to sizzling new levels. The quartet—boasting a “skate-boarder punk saxophone” and “wild metro-gnome”—grinds hip-hop and techno bravado into classical chordwork, for nightclubs and concert halls alike.
